Andrea Hickson-Martin, EdD
Dr. Andrea R. Hickson-Martin is the Graduate Programs Coordinator for Early Childhood and Elementary Education and Assistant Professor in the School of Education, Human and Health Sciences.
Bay Path’s Graduate Program in Elementary Education prepares graduate students for their role as highly trained educators in the field of education. Under Dr. Hickson-Martin’s direction, the program provides students with an intensive study of content and pedagogy for improved classroom practice. The overarching intent of the program is to deepen the content/subject matter knowledge for teachers at the elementary level. The integration of didactic and pedagogical applications enables students to consider new practices that result in improved classroom performance.
Dr. Hickson-Martin comes to Bay Path University with a wealth of experience in the public and private education setting. She worked in urban education for over a decade and a half as a history teacher in Holyoke, Massachusetts. In her tenure with the public schools, she was an Intel Teach to the Future Master Teacher and a Master Teacher with the NASA Living with a Star program. While affiliated with NASA, Dr. Hickson-Martin presented at several international conferences both in the continental United States and the Caribbean Islands on various science and social studies topics. While teaching in Holyoke she received the Harold Grinspoon Teacher of Excellence awarded by her district. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Hickson-Martin was a member of a school instructional leadership team, co-chair of the data team, cluster leader, faculty representative on the PTO and a school council team member. In 2014, she went to the Springfield Public Schools where she served as assistant principal at Sumner Avenue Elementary School.
She holds Professional Massachusetts Teacher Certification in Elementary, 1-6, Middle School 5-9, Instructional Technology, Principal/Assistant Principal PreK-6, Principal/Assistant Principal 5-8, Principal/Assistant Principal 9-12 and an endorsement as a Sheltered English Immersion teacher.
Dr. Hickson-Martin received her BA in Elementary Education and History from the Elms College in Chicopee, MA and earned her Master of Education in Administration also from the Elms College. She received her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in School Administration from American International College in Springfield, MA, and was awarded a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Supervision from American International College.
