One America: Traveling the Intracoastal Waterway

The annual One America trip for 2016 will start in the historic city of St. Augustine, Florida, and move up the coast to visit the quaint squares and parks of Savannah, Georgia, and finally end in one of the jewels of Southern cities—Charleston, South Carolina.

On each of these stops, Bay Path students will find a common heritage of Southern charm, history, and cuisine. Founded by the Spanish in 1565, St. Augustine is America’s oldest city, and is known to house Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth. Tucked behind a jigsaw puzzle of islands, Savannah’s oak trees of Spanish moss, cobblestone streets, and intimate neighborhoods provide a mood of mystery and enchantment. To prepare them for the “feel” of their destination, one of the required readings for the students was the bestselling novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The last few days of the trip will be in the remarkably preserved city of Charleston. Although the Civil War (otherwise known as the War of Northern Aggression) started in this port city, it miraculously survived the devastation of Sherman’s March and maintains its character and feel to this day.
