Meet Concepcion, Class of 2021

Bay Path Transfer Student Concepcion MendozaConcepcion Mendoza of Somers, Connecticut, wanted more campus life than was possible where she was enrolled, at the all-commuter Manchester Community College. In March 2018 she began talking with Bay Path admissions staff about her career goals in the medical field. “They were friendly and helpful about choosing classes and immediately answered any question I had,” Concepcion remembers. The following spring, she smoothly transferred to Bay Path, applying all her credits to a major in Biochemistry, and she hasn’t looked back.

Not sure what to expect both as a new transfer student and as a commuter student, Concepcion found it easy to become a part of the Bay Path community. “I was surprised by the support that faculty and peers gave me, along with feeling welcomed as a transfer and commuter student,” Concepcion stated. “I was able to engage with different activities on campus and enjoy a social life with new peers. There are lots of areas to get involved, even for commuters like me – studying with friends in the café, taking Friday morning boxing classes in the fitness center, joining field trips to Boston. It’s been amazing.”

When asked about one of her favorites things about Bay Path, Concepcion stated, “The school in general is a place where I can see myself strive for academic goals and long term achievement. Being at an all-women’s school has been very empowering. The students are kind and work as teams in small classes. The faculty are inspiring, push us to strive, and are always there for us.”

Concepcion has already convinced one friend to transfer to Bay Path. To others considering it, she says, “Do a tour. You’ll fall in love. Take a deep breath and go with the flow, because BPU facility and peers are there to help you achieve your goals. The campus life is welcoming and you will be inspired to learn!”

Meet Haylie, Class of 2021

Bay Path Transfer Student Haylie PruckerAfter one year of study at Asnuntuck Community College, Haylie Prucker of Stafford Springs, Connecticut, fell for Bay Path’s beautiful campus and small classes. Working with admissions staff during summer 2018, she transferred all her college credits and entered her desired major of Pre-Med in fall 2018.

“New student orientations made the process easier and made me feel really welcomed,” said Haylie. She feels both challenged and supported by her peers and her professors, and feels the small classes help to create personal bonds with her professors. “One thing that has surprised me about Bay Path is how much I actually enjoy being at an all-girls school,” Haylie stated. “I was initially skeptical, however, I have met so many strong, intelligent women who will certainly be my friends for a lifetime! Being at an all-girls school opens so many opportunities for scholarships and empowerment. I am constantly surrounded by strong, independent women who are all looking to succeed.”

Now that she’s completed several courses in her major, Haylie is particularly impressed by her professors. “I really like that the majority of my courses are taught by doctors,” Haylie said. “This helps me to network and also gain knowledge and feedback through my professors’ real life experiences.”

In addition to preparing her for a future medical degree, the Bay Path community is also teaching her things that fall outside of the scope of a textbook. “One lesson that I have taken away from the program thus far is that hard work truly pays off. You do not have to be the smartest, but if you work hard enough, you will come out on top every time,” stated Haylie.

Haylie aims to become an Emergency Medicine physician, a goal she sees Bay Path helping her achieve through its required internship, advising support, and tutoring help. To anyone who is hesitant to transfer to Bay Path, Haylie has some practical advice: “Shadow a current student in your desired program. It is important to get a feel for how classes are taught as well as meet some of your possible professors. Small schools are not for everyone, but if you want to be successful in your field, Bay Path is a great choice!”
